How Is Fruit Produced?

The Holy Spirit produces one kind of fruit, that is, Christ-likeness.  It is produced as Christians live in communion with the Lord.  As we gaze upon the Savior in loving devotion and obey Him in daily life, the Holy Spirit works a wonderful miracle.  He transforms us into the likeness of Christ.  We become like Him by beholding Him 2 Corinthians 3:18 and we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. Just as the branch derives all its life and nourishment from the vine, so the believer in Christ derives strength from the True Vine and is thus able to live a fruitful life for God.

God uses trees and plants to contrast the two natures

Holy Spirit
Jeremiah 17:7-8
7 “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him.
8 They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”The man who trust in the Lord, whose confidence indeed is the Lord, is blessed.
He will be like a tree planted by water: it sends its roots out toward a stream,
it doesn’t fear when heat comes, and it’s foliage remains green.
It will not worry in a year of drought or cease producing fruit.Psalm 1:3
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and
whose leaf does not wither–whatever they do prospers. He (a righteous man) is like a tree planted beside streams of water that bears its fruit in season and
whose leaf does not wither, whatever he does prospers.
Matthew 7:17-23
17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit.
18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.
19 Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.
20 Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

True and False Disciples
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but
only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and
in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

In the same way, every good tree produces good fruit…A good tree can’t produce bad fruit….

Galatians 5:17-23
17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh.
They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever[a] you want.
18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery;
20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions
21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those
who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, self-control.
Against such things there is no law.

2 Peter 1:4
4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.
He has given us very great and precious promises so that through them you may share in the divine nature

How can I Grow?

Read and study the descriptions of the fruits; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control or any of the biblical fruits (godly characteristics) that he calls us to emulate and put into our relationships.  These are essential to growing a healthy and lasting relationship.  You can examine the descriptions, look up the scriptures, and then ask yourself these six questions.

  1.  Is this fruit working in me?
  2. How do I now exhibit this fruit in my daily life?
  3. How can I use this fruit to develop a better willingness to respond to others especially to the ones I love with a sense of awe and fear of God and respect for people?
  4. What blocks this fruit from working and being exhibited in me?
  5. How can I make this fruit function better, stronger and faster, even in times of uncertainty and stress?
  6. Think through the steps you might take to put this fruit into action in a specific instance, or to improve it.  Consider the examples from the passages in God’s word.

How is my Fertility?

How is the fruit of the spirit growing in you?  How should his fruit be growing in and through you?  Keep in mind that it means Christ comes through you in all things and times!  Our faith will be tested not to attack or cause us to fail but to teach us to be more faithful, stronger and better so we can be better to those around us.  God wants us holy and pure in him

1 Peter 15-16

To make us pure he needs to prune and refine us.  This is not drudgery, but an opportunity to become more than we could ever be on our own.  Our growth in him comes from faith, spiritual maturity and character development.  These are things more precious than any gold, personal success or financial portfolio.  As we go through the tough stuff of life, we will grow and become stronger.  We will worship him more deeply and purely.  We will honor him more deeply, more relevantly and also touch the lives of others more deeply.

Life is not about our wants, needs or comfort; it sis about Christ working in us more powerfully and triumphantly.  The key to turn on this engine of our spiritual formation is our willingness to pursue, endure and grow.  Allow the holiness of our Lord.  His grace, his patience, understanding, faith, loyalty, goodness and love to be exhibited in you–not by imitation, being fake but imitating Christ and gratitude and submission, kept by his power!

1 Corinthians 1:30
It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

Colossians 1:27
Galatians 5:21-23
Ephesians 5:1
Philippians 2:1
Hebrews 6:12
1 Peter 1:5

And do not forget to be in prayer during this spiritual character development process. Have someone you trust hold you accountable or get in a small bible study group to learn and practice.
